Biography

Enhe Zhu (b. 1998) is a multidisciplinary artist working primarily in sculpture and installation. Her practice explores the relationship between gender, labour, and care through materials connected to industrial production and domestic work. Drawing on feminist perspectives, she investigates how repetitive labour, caregiving, and productivity become embodied, shaping women's lived experiences.

Growing up in her family's textile factory deeply influenced Zhu's understanding of labour, material production, and everyday life. This experience led her to explore gendered labour, women and technology, and motherhood. Her work examines how women have historically balanced factory work and domestic responsibilities. Rather than treating machines as separate from the body, she considers machinery as an embodiment of women's labour, asking how women become deeply connected to social and industrial systems through repetitive, expected, and often overlooked forms of work.

Zhu works with wool, discarded sewing machine parts, metal, and fabric, combining making with material experimentation. By transforming existing structures and bringing together soft and hard materials, she creates works that reveal both tension and connection between them. Through these material relationships, she explores women's relationship with machinery, including bodily autonomy, women's role in social reproduction, and the visible and invisible forms of labour embedded in everyday life.

Personal memory forms another key thread in her practice. Drawing from lived experience, Zhu reflects on themes of mortality, intimacy, and the complex emotional dynamics within mother-daughter relationships. These narratives are not presented as fixed stories but as fragmented, evolving impressions.

Material experimentation plays a central role in Zhu’s process. She engages a diverse range of media and textures, allowing material properties and technical processes to inform the development of each work. Through this approach, her practice remains fluid, open-ended, and responsive to both conceptual inquiry and sensory experience.
